<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The last few years of my life have been like a foggy
haze. I had no real focus, I was just
sort of floating. I was numb, and I didn't
even realize. Luckily, life decided to
shake me out of my daze and wake me up.
After losing a job, an apartment, and ending a relationship, I packed up
my things and moved 400 miles away. I had no idea what I was doing.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
At first I was depressed.
I didn't know if I had made the right decision, if I would find
happiness here. I was completely alone in a new city. I missed home and my old life, no matter how unhappy I had been. I started thinking that I had made a mistake. But then it
happened. I was driving around the
lake. I had every single window
down, and Tom Petty was blaring. The sweet summer air blew my hair in circles
around my head, and I felt a sense of freedom that I had been missing for
years. The only person I had to answer
to was myself. I was living completely for me.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I realized that the reason for my unhappiness had not been
a place, or a person, or a job. It had
been my motivation. I had let the expectations
of others, their wants, become my driving force. I was living for other people, putting all of
my effort in to making them happy, even when that meant my happiness was left
behind. I was being who everyone else
wanted me to be, and, honestly, I didn't like that girl at all.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But now! Now I was whoever I wanted to be. I had the freedom to find myself, even if who I found wasn't what everyone expected or wanted.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So here is my question for you: Who are you living for? Are you doing the things you do because they are going
to make you happy? Or are you doing them for appearances, to impress others, to
gain their approval, to make them happy?
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
You are the captain of your own destiny. You are the sole champion of your life. Do it justice. I promise that if you do, you
will find true happiness. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcCgj2h30ddtVxW8kuqMwzWIFbXpu3rV8aQLhIUuoKkZ_MkI4OHTy0u0Fjiytkk67ViCGIfJmUL7gWx1YUnSGXbz59Q6FxknJQWNMwBRx2LSA-mHdhNv28oarnkeeNLYsGS6YaGUJf5-c/s1600/IMG_20140905_190053.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcCgj2h30ddtVxW8kuqMwzWIFbXpu3rV8aQLhIUuoKkZ_MkI4OHTy0u0Fjiytkk67ViCGIfJmUL7gWx1YUnSGXbz59Q6FxknJQWNMwBRx2LSA-mHdhNv28oarnkeeNLYsGS6YaGUJf5-c/s1600/IMG_20140905_190053.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Recently I did an interview on Dobe Globe, and was
asked what things I could never travel without.
This question got me thinking, so here are my top five items that are always with me when traveling.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<b>1. CAMERA</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
I think that this one is pretty universal. Taking amazing pictures is half the fun of
traveling, right? My current camera is
the Cannon T3i, and yes, I am absolutely in love with it.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<b>2. PHONE</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
When I first started traveling, taking my phone with me
wasn't a big deal. It didn't work for
phone calls, and it didn't have much else use. Now everything is different. It
is amazing how much smartphones can do for you while traveling. All you need is a little wifi and you can call, text, navigate, look up places to go,
Instagram, email, check in for flights, pretty much do anything.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<b>3. SUNGLASSES</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
Oh how I love a good pair of sunnies. For one, my eyes are pretty sensitive to
light. If I try to look up at some gorgeous building while the sun is shining, my eyes will start to water like
crazy. But with sunglasses, I can look at
anything I want, and my eyes will still be happy. They also come in handy when you want to
cover up your jet lagged appearance in pictures.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<b>4. WATER BOTTLE</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
I am constantly drinking water. Staying hydrated is always important, but
when you are on your feet for 15+ hours a day and walking miles while
traveling, it becomes crucial. I like to
make sure that I always bring water with me because it saves me form having to
stop and from having to pay.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<b>5. JOURNAL</b></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
So much happens while you travel. You go to so many
places, meet so many people, it is impossible to remember it all. To make sure I don’t lose any of the things
I soak up while traveling, I like to write them down. I’ll be honest, while I would
like to really journal and write while traveling, most the time all I manage to
do is jot down names of places, restaurants, and people, and the occasional
random word that will help remind me of a certain story or adventure.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It was my first time in Europe. I was so excited about everything I was going
to see that I could cry, but there was one thing that excited me above all
else: Versailles. I had dreamed about my trip to the palace, and when the day finally
came I could hardly contain
myself. I was traveling with my mother,
and, as usually, I was grouchy on our morning train ride from Paris. Morning’s are not my strong suit, and the
fact that coffee in France comes in a thimble did not help. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Once we arrived in Versailles, we were greeted by a line that would make Disneyland jealous. When we finally made it through, my head was
spinning as I tried to take it all in. I was trying to form a plan, organize my thoughts so I could be sure to not miss anything. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I have to pee.” As soon as I heard my mom speak the words, I
knew it was going to be another half hour before I was able to explore. The
line for the bathroom was nearly as long as the line to get in. I took a deep breathe, summoned my patience, and found a windowsill to sit in as I waited, taking the opportunity to use the free wifi.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I
waited, and waited, and waited. What was taking so long? I looked at the time. I started paying attention to the people in
line. I watched people go all the way through the line and come
back out, but my mom was nowhere to be seen. I went into the bathroom and called her name.
Nothing. Oh well, I thought, she must have just missed me and gone
ahead. No big deal. It's not like it will be hard to find her in
the sea of 388383 people, right?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I decided to go through the main section of the
palace because that seemed like the most likely place to find her. I walked fast, not looking at anything but
the people, trying to spot her among the tourists. I ignored the Hall of Mirrors, the Queen's apartment, the Royal Chapel. I went through the whole palace
in around 10 minutes.
I didn't see her anywhere. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifYSzkZBzLCilZFTtyHoNoDV8tyUb9U_jZcDKT30GEUfUjyoBblq_2Q9rZ0hxg5n85o_EAuqXgKPn7xVRy_4kDnEDKg5SorG9vEiBs5xRXU8GpNkGFr8DeFSoEK087mQRkORmN48SsbK8/s1600/IMG_20140722_094032.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifYSzkZBzLCilZFTtyHoNoDV8tyUb9U_jZcDKT30GEUfUjyoBblq_2Q9rZ0hxg5n85o_EAuqXgKPn7xVRy_4kDnEDKg5SorG9vEiBs5xRXU8GpNkGFr8DeFSoEK087mQRkORmN48SsbK8/s1600/IMG_20140722_094032.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I rationalized
that she would probably be waiting for me at the main exit before you reach the
garden. I got there, looked around, but she was nowhere to be seen. I walked
around a little, staring at everyone I saw.
Panic was starting to rise in my gut.
Where was she? Could I have missed her? I sat down and waited, watching
the people stream out of the palace, searching for her face. I went to the café, looking at every person
in every seat. I looked in the gift
shop, the line for the tram, I went back to the palace entrance. I went through the attractions, again looking
at nothing but people. She just wasn't anywhere. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I decided she must be
somewhere in the gardens, and as Versailles is absolutely gigantic, there was no way I
could look everywhere. I figured she had
to leave at some point, so I could wait by the exit, watch everyone leave, and
spot her there. At this point, closing
time was approaching soon, as I had already spent my whole day searching. I found a seat on a wall near the exit and started
watching. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Nothing. I watched a little
longer. Nothing. I was really starting
to panic at this point. What if I didn't find her? I was the one who navigated
our way through the trains and subway. Could she find her way home? Did she even have any money? I knew I had to
find her. I looked harder, willing myself
to see her, but all I saw were unfamiliar faces.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I sat on that wall for around three hours, waiting until well after the palace had
closed and the streams of people had subsided.
My panic had risen with every passing hour. My only hope now was that I
had missed her and would find her at the hotel.
I took the train back to Paris, and the subway back to our hotel. I tried to calm myself down in the elevator.
I held my breath as I opened the door to our room. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh_Gl_bGEAJiipEAkJyUHBdNWoOF2WPxT1t1GAJAxEZ2KA0PbDlmyPXaD95urobGnWb3CLnuz5WSNzCM13xZMv-a_LlqKfcemoxuTr2tQDHLGG0nmjoBrOB70kJ4zzUSzevyobY8oLEVY/s1600/IMG_20140804_194726.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh_Gl_bGEAJiipEAkJyUHBdNWoOF2WPxT1t1GAJAxEZ2KA0PbDlmyPXaD95urobGnWb3CLnuz5WSNzCM13xZMv-a_LlqKfcemoxuTr2tQDHLGG0nmjoBrOB70kJ4zzUSzevyobY8oLEVY/s1600/IMG_20140804_194726.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It was empty.
The room was empty, and there was no sign that she had been there at
all. It was eight o'clock at night. The palace had closed at five. Maybe she missed the train
back? Maybe she stopped somewhere to get food?
I tried to talk myself out of my worry.
If she wasn't back by nine, I told myself, then you can worry. Nine came and went. Ten I thought, if she isn't back by ten then something really must be wrong. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
By ten I was in tears. I was
thinking of everything that could have happened. I called Versailles see if they had any information that would help me. They only spoke French and
broken English. I only spoke English and broken French. They must have thought I was insane,
hysterically crying about my missing mother. No they told me, we know nothing about it. I
tried to call my step dad on Skype, hoping a familiar voice would calm me down, but the internet in our hotel didn't work. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
By eleven I knew she was a goner. There was nothing she could have been doing
for the six hours since the park closed. I
went down to ask my hotel receptionist if I should call the police. He looked shocked at my tear streamed face.
Give it another hour he said. It will be
okay. I went back to my empty hotel room, and sat around for another hour, trying my hardest to keep it together.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A little after twelve, the phone rang. I answered it
before the first ring was even over. It
was the hotel receptionist. He had seen
her come through the lobby. Relief flooded over me. She was alive. As soon as she opened the door I was wrapping
my arms around her,.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Thanks for leaving me,” she said in probably the rudest
voice she could muster. She was angry and hurt, and I couldn't understand why. I explained to her what my day had been like, asked where the hell she had been. Apparently, she had assumed that I didn't want to wait for her and left her behind. She had spent her day exploring, then gone out to a nice dinner, gotten dessert, a few glasses of wine, the whole nine yards. My panic had been for nothing.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As with any traveler experience, I learned a great lesson from this ordeal. When traveling with someone, ALWAYS have a plan for if you get separated. Have a meeting spot and time. Know what you will do if you can't find each other. Be sure that each of you has money and knows the way back. If you do this, you will avoid spending an entire day in a panic, searching for your lost travel companion.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have always been a dreamer. Constantly imagining the great
things I was going to do with my life, the adventures I would have, the trips I
would take, the things I would achieve.
But that was all they ever were. Dreams.
They only existed in the far off future that I had created in my head,
never in the moment that I currently resided in. Never
in reality.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While dreaming is necessary in order to achieve greatness,
there is also a second, much more necessary step, and that is doing. So often people, myself included, get so
caught up and stuck in the dreaming stage that they never move on to making
things happen.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Actually doing things can be hard, much harder than
dreaming. When we start to actually do the things we dream about, we run the risk
of things not going the way we want. We
risk failure and disappointment. We risk
losing our dreams.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But isn’t the alternative worse? Wouldn’t you rather fail than always wonder
what would have happened if you’d tried?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Stop putting off the life you want for “someday.” The only
thing that is real is today, this moment, the life that you are currently
living. Make a change. Take someday out
of your vocabulary, and instead focus your attention on making the time that
you do have count. Make each moment
count. Make each day count.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Do what you can with what you have. Take whatever steps, no matter how small,
that you can toward the things you want. Learn everything you can, take every
opportunity, do whatever you need to do to get where you want to go. Do not waste any more time dreaming about the
things you want. Take each day and make it count.<o:p></o:p></div>

to. In fact, because of the negative
media, visitors now have the rare opportunity of exploring the sights with
relatively no crowds. As I am not sure

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>YOU CAN SURVIVE (AND THRIVE) ANYWHERE</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When I first got off the plane, I was incredibly
overwhelmed and anxious. This was the furthest I had ever been from
home, and my first time leaving the country alone. The airline lost my luggage. I took the subway the wrong direction on my
first day of school. I had no idea what
the lady at the railway station meant when she told me to wait in the queue. The city was so big I thought I
would never get my bearings. I remember
after my first week feeling like I had made a huge mistake. What was I doing here? All I wanted was to talk to someone back
home, but I couldn't get the internet to work, and they were all sound asleep whenever I was awake anyway. I honestly wasn't sure if I would last, but then something amazing
happened. Each day I woke up and I was a little less anxious. I learned and I grew and I
survived. I found my place in this new life.
I got so comfortable with the city that I was soon giving directions to
lost tourists. When it came time to go back to the sates, I felt like I was leaving home, not going home. Basically, change is
always scary, but there will come a time when that change feels normal and you will completely forget that you were even afraid to begin with.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>THE WORLD IS A LOT BIGGER (AND SMALLER) THAN YOU THINK</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Growing up, many people are never exposed to travel. While some may have the opportunity to see a bit of the world, others may never leave their home town. Because of this, it is easy to become wrapped up in your own world and forget how much more there is out there. But, here is the truth: the world is vast, and it can sometimes feel overwhelmingly so. There are so many places to see and corners to explore that you can never
do it all. If you travel somewhere,
you will only discover ten more places that you want to go. However, as big as the world is, it is also small in a way. People are just people, wherever you go. No matter where you are in the world, there will always be someone or something you can relate to. You will always find a way to fit in.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>HOME WILL ALWAYS BE THERE WHEN YOU GET BACK</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It is easy to feel homesick. It is easy to miss people and
places. It is easy to look at the things
everyone back home is doing and feel like you are missing out. Yes, life goes on without
you there, but eventually you will go home, and when you do it will be almost like you never left. Home will always be there, and when you get back you
will find yourself homesick for your time abroad.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>FEAR AND ANXIETY DON'T HAVE TO STOP YOU</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As someone who struggles with anxiety, I faced some extra
hurdles while living abroad. In the beginning I let my anxiety and fears keep me from doing things, but I knew that that was no way to live, and definitely no way to live abroad. I had to push myself, and I found that the more I did, the less anxiety I had. Let
your fear and anxiety become a propeller, pushing you forward, rather than a
weight holding you back. Force yourself
to do the things that scare you, and you will find that they begin to scare you
less and less. Yes, there may be some
moments of weakness, some panic attacks, some hard days, but ultimately, you will come out happier and stronger.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING ALONE</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Before moving abroad, I was constantly surrounded by
people. My friends and family were
always around. I never went to the
store, the park, out to eat, anywhere by myself. For a while, I did not know how to handle
being completely alone. I felt like something was missing, like I looked strange eating alone, like I wouldn't have as much fun without someone there. But soon, I
began to embrace it, to enjoy my own company, to feel comfortable sitting in a
restaurant by myself. Yes, going out
with people is fun, but going out alone can be just as fun, and more rewarding.
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<b>THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IN LIFE IS EXPLORE AND GROW</b><br />
<div>
I have done a lot of great things in my life. I have spent the last 22 years packing in as much life as possible. But out of everything I have done, study abroad, travel, and the self growth that comes with it has by far been the most memorable, the most rewarding, and the most life changing. Pushing myself out
of my comfort zone, moving half way around the world, and exploring as much as
possible is the single best thing I have ever done. The most important thing we can do with our time is to explore, and learn, and grow.<br />

<b>6. TREAT YOUR SELF</b><o:p></o:p></div>

Paris is the style capital of the world. So, instead of spending money on souvenirs you will never look at again, treat yourself to something special. Buy something you wouldn't normally
get. A dress, a bag, a perfume. There is no better feeling that answering the question “Where did you get
that?” with Paris. Just make sure whatever you get is in fact French, and not just a pricier version of something from your home country.<br />

they did. The stores, resturants, and

<b>10. VISIT THE OPERA GARNIER</b><br />
The Opera is one of the most beautiful buildings in Paris, and that is saying a lot. It is often overlooked by tourists, which means the crowds are significantly smaller than other parts of the city. It has all the splendor of Versailles with half the people, and an added air of mystery, as this building inspired the story <i>The Phantom of the Opera</i>. Go walk around, or see an actual opera if you are lucky enough to score tickets.<br />

Let’s face it. No matter what we do, we are going to be
faced with crowds while travelling. You
want to see the world’s top destinations? Great! So does everyone else, and they all planning on going the same time as you.
Does that mean you should avoid going?
Absolutely not! Here are my top
tips for handling crowds while travelling.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ8pWkJEu0a1t8XvjCa6ADjQFQ3GWA9nbv2_dP1LuBNuaIor9IokAhSNFFTHZ7N8neOO9YNU1GX-sp75_3scvGnxE1jv7REWvP03z9y3brgBGEMePyQ6wPLCr5cQjMwiPAbSx4FFdlryo/s1600/IMG_20140717_212930.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ8pWkJEu0a1t8XvjCa6ADjQFQ3GWA9nbv2_dP1LuBNuaIor9IokAhSNFFTHZ7N8neOO9YNU1GX-sp75_3scvGnxE1jv7REWvP03z9y3brgBGEMePyQ6wPLCr5cQjMwiPAbSx4FFdlryo/s1600/IMG_20140717_212930.jpg" height="640" width="474" /></a></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<b>GO IN THE OFF SEASON</b><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
This is probably the most common tip for dealing with
crowds. Find the time that the least
amount of people go, and plan your tip for then. There is nothing wrong with exploring Europe
in the snow, or Hawaii in the rain, especially if it means you will get to
explore alone.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>SPLIT UP</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you are traveling in a group, or even a pair, it can be
helpful to split up, especially when exploring museums/historical sites. Pick a time and place to meet, and then go
off on your own. It is much easier for
one person to maneuver through a crowd than it is for a group of people. You will also get the added perk of seeing what
you want to see without having to accommodate someone else.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>SEE THE SUNRISE</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Another popular tip is to get up early. The earlier you get up, the less people will be
out; it's that simple. While this tip is great for
handling crowds, it is also great for getting the most out of your
travels. Sure, the Eiffel Tower is
gorgeous, but the deserted Eiffel Tower at sunrise is magical.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
<b>GET YOUR TICKETS ONLINE</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I am always so surprised that more people don't do this. Getting tickets online can help you avoiding waiting in ticket lines when you arrive. Some attractions also have passes/deals that allow you to move to the front of line when going in. If this option exists USE IT. Don't waste your precious travel time waiting in a line.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>TRAVEL OFF THE BEATEN PATH</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When the crowds get a little too much to handle, you can
always travel off the beaten path.
Sometimes all it takes to escape the crowd of a busy street is to walk
up one street, and voila! PEACE. This
can also mean exploring less talked about parts of the city, escaping to the
country for a few days, letting yourself go wherever the wind blows you.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>HAVE PATIENCE</b> <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Generally, having patience is always something we should
try to do, but it is especially important when traveling. If there is a huge group swarming you, take a step back, wait, and they will pass. Don’t
get caught up in the rush of crowds and miss out.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>HAVE A SOUNDTRACK</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This tip has seriously changed the way I travel. If you take one thing away from this post,
let it be this. Bring. Your. Headphones.
You know what is a million times better than walking through the British
Museum listening to screaming children, yelling adults, and a jumble of every
language known to man? Walking through the British Museum listening to City and
Color. Find some music that you think fits the mood of whatever place you are
visiting, put in your earphones, drown out the crowds, and give your travels a
soundtrack. <o:p></o:p></div>

It is inevitable. In fact, it will probably happen again and again. You will be going along and suddenly, without warning, things will fall apart. The universe will decide to take the snow globe that is your life and give it a good, hard shake. All of the parts of your life that you thought were settled will become a scattered mess, and you will be left with the task of picking up the pieces. While you do not have a choice on when, where, or how this happens, you do have a choice in how you deal with it, how you look at it, and how you move forward. Here are some choices that helped me.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQV7s87WbStR59dWFi4d9JEd9uW3CSdKwR-1DyCAN15387KFi8fFG-nVpOTsh8snONNDPJfX106wOMxd86rUR3oYnbIhDiIPAwmSmeJ8xwXFwEXzXcuosFW68WwonhlBD1qkQBJTA9_e8/s1600/IMG_20140522_054313.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQV7s87WbStR59dWFi4d9JEd9uW3CSdKwR-1DyCAN15387KFi8fFG-nVpOTsh8snONNDPJfX106wOMxd86rUR3oYnbIhDiIPAwmSmeJ8xwXFwEXzXcuosFW68WwonhlBD1qkQBJTA9_e8/s1600/IMG_20140522_054313.jpg" height="353" width="640" /></a></div>
<b><br /></b>
<b>CHOOSE TO LET GO OF THINGS YOU CANT CHANGE</b><br />
So many things in life are out of our control, so why do we still focus so much on them? Stop wasting your time an energy. Choose to let them go. Instead, focus on things that you can actually change and that are in your control. It will be time better spent<br />
<br />
<b>CHOOSE TO MOVE FORWARD</b><br />
The past is the past. Things have already happened, and the best thing that we can do is accept them and move forward. There is no reason to dwell, to relive bad memories, or to let them hold you back.<br />
<br />
<b>CHOOSE TO PUT YOURSELF FIRST</b><br />
This one can be really, really hard, but sometimes it is necessary. Stop paying so much attention to what everyone else wants and expects and ask yourself what you want. Give yourself permission to live your own life.<br />
<br />
<b>CHOOSE TO THROW YOURSELF INTO SOMETHING YOU LOVE</b><br />
When bad things happen, it can be really helpful to throw yourself into something to take your mind of it. Instead of putting all of that energy into something negative (like dwelling on the past), put it into something you really care about. That blog you have been meaning to start? Do it. That skill you wanted to learn? Learn it. That trip you wanted to take? Take it.<br />
<br />
<b>CHOOSE TO SEE IT AS AN OPPORTUNITY</b><br />
It is so easy to look at things in a negative light. Challenge yourself to take a bad situation and make it positive. Look at everything as an opportunity. An opportunity to learn, grow, rebuild, change, make better. In reality, that is exactly what it is.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12140351733300813621noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7782895742545569875.post-68426154495181882302014-04-21T21:43:00.000-07:002014-08-07T22:20:43.900-07:00Turckheim, France: A Fairytale Village<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .25in;">
When I think of a typical European
village, I see multi colored half-timber houses, cobble stone streets, old shutters, and little shop windows. After travelling to a few European cities, I
found myself craving this tiny storybook setting. I wanted to see fairytale Europe, and I figured
France was a good place to start. After
researching destinations, I came across two famous “villages,” Strasbourg and
Colmar. While a Google Image search on
these places will bring up loads of beautiful wanderlusty photos, further research
showed that these were more cities than villages, and so were a little larger
than I wanted. After looking at the
surrounding villages, I found Turckheim, France and discovered that it was exactly the fairytale village I had been looking for.</div>

Turckheim is the perfect place to
base yourself out of while exploring the Alsace region of France. You can easily explore Colmar or Strasbourg
on a day trip, cross the border into Germany, and drive along the famous Les

Not only is Turckheim a great

The town also has a charming
tradition: the Night Watchman. Every
night from May to October, the Night Watchman, a Turckheim native dressed to fit the part, strolls around the
city, checking each of the doors in the medieval walls, and signing traditional
Alsatian songs. It is free to accompany
him, and, although the songs are all in French, he makes a point of teaching
them to his followers so they can join in (He even let me hold the lantern
once). <o:p></o:p></div>

It was happening again.<o:p></o:p><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
I was sitting in my cubicle, minding my own business, when
this sudden wave of panic hit. <i>What was
I doing here?</i> This was not where I was meant to be. Life was out there, happening, passing me
by. There were countries, cities, lakes,
forests, buildings that I had yet to explore, and I was spending my time
sitting behind a computer screen. </div>

This feeling goes by many names. Wanderlust, travel bug, the itch, but
whatever you call it, you know it when you feel it. That wave of panic. That feeling that starts in your gut and
quickly spreads throughout your entire body.
That inescapable, undeniable desire to go somewhere new, see something
that takes your breath away, experience a change. This is the feeling that struck me as I sat
at work, acting normal, doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing. This is the feeling that, after months and
months of pushing it down, explodes out of me once or twice a year at the least. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I wish that this was the post telling you I have quit my job
to take up a permanent place on the road, but alas, that is not what this
is. It is, however, a post to tell you
that I have booked a flight to Canada.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While Canada may fall flat when compared with the foreign lands
you were initially imagining, it is nevertheless something new. I am a little embarrassed to admit that,
although I was born and raised in the US, I have never made my way to
Canada. As I had a week’s worth of time
off saved and a bite sized budget, Canada seemed like the perfect option for a much
needed mini adventure.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Initially the plan was to take a solo trip to Montreal,
Quebec City, and Toronto, but as every traveler knows, the initial plan never
looks the same as the final one. After
weeks of researching flights, hotels, attractions, etc., a new plan formed, and
with it came a travel buddy. I am now
going to be spending a week in Victoria and Vancouver, with a short stop in
Seattle. My mom, who also happens to be
my favorite travel companion, is coming along.</div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
I am hoping that a week in Canada is enough to ward off the
wanderlust for at least another few months (or the end of another semester, as
it seems that is how I measure my life these days). Having travel planning to occupy my brain has
already subdued the urge to run away during my lunch breaks, and that in itself
is a victory. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Step One: Create a Goal to Work Toward</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Obviously, traveling the world requires money, and money
requires saving, but saving is far more effective when you have a goal. Where do you want to go? How much will it cost? While you do not need a day by day itinerary,
it is a good idea to have an outline of the trip you want to take and a
reasonable estimation of how much it will cost.
This means looking into flights, hotels, attractions, etc. Once you have a number and a set goal you are
working toward, saving begins to seem more meaningful/significant/easy/momentous/important. You will be able to see your progress, the
trip will seem more attainable, and every penny saved will feel like a little
victory. <o:p></o:p></div>

</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Step Two: Set a Date (and someday doesn’t count)</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say, “I
would like to go there someday,” I would be able to fund a lifetime of
travels. Someday implies an arbitrary
date in the future, and sadly, for many, someday just never comes. But why can’t someday be today, or tomorrow,
or next spring? Setting a date is such a
simple thing, but if you never get yourself to do it, you will miss out on a
lifetime of memories, experiences, and adventures. My suggestion is to tie your date setting to
your savings. Do some budgeting, find
out when you will reach your savings goal, determine your when you can take time off, and voilà, there is your date. <o:p></o:p></div>

</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Step Three: Take the Lead</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We have all been there.
You get on the topic of a dream destination with a friend, begin talking
about your common desire to see it, and a plan takes shape. Both your hearts fill with excitement as you
discuss all the places you just HAVE to see, discover you both have time off in
January, and both continuously utter the phrase, “I’m serious! We are doing
this!” But then you both go home, the
magic wears off, and while you may comment about the trip again half-heartedly,
it never actually happens. Do not fall
into this trap! Take the lead, make the
decision, and just do it! Start planning and saving. Take action. Form a plan with a budget and a
date, and present it to your potential travel partner. When you do this, one of two things will
happen. They will either be enthusiastic
and excited, and start adding their ideas to the plan, or they will brush you
off, letting you know once and for all that they are not serious about this
adventure. In this case, proceed to step
four. <o:p></o:p></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Scotland</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Step Four: Don’t Be Afraid to Go at it Alone</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One of the hardest things about traveling is finding someone
to go with. Someone who’s travel
desires, budget, schedule, and attitude match your own. But here is the thing: you don’t need
them. Solo travel allows you to do
whatever you want. There is no one else
to please. Now, if the very idea of setting off into the great unknown by
yourself is overwhelming and terrifying, you have other options. There are a multitude of group tours doing
every type of travel in every corner of the world that you can join as a solo traveler. Going with a group eliminates the stress of
planning, the fear of going alone, and the issue of having no one to travel
with. These tours may also give you the
confidence to go alone next time, introduce you to friends you can travel with
in the future, or inspires someone back home to finally plan a trip with you.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Step Five: Research</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My favorite step: research.
You have money saved, a date set, now all that’s left is to plan. First
things first, book your plane tickets. This
gives you a beginning and an end to your trip, and ensures that you get the
best rate by booking early. Next, fill
in the in between time. Where do you
want to stay? What to do you want to do, see, eat, experience? Use all the resources you can. Scour the internet, read guidebooks, and look
at photos. Get inspired and excited.
Read about the culture, history, and language.
Learn everything you can before you go, and enjoy the building anticipation
as your trip approaches. </div>

<b><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">1. Explore Westminster</span></b><br />
Westminster is perhaps the most
famous area of London. Located on the
north bank of the River Thames, Westminster includes the Houses of Parliament,
Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and St James’s Park. There are tremendous views of the London Eye,
and Buckingham Palace is just a short walk up the street. If you are looking to knock all the major
sights out in one go, this stop will do it.<br />

<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>2. Climb to the top of St. Paul’s</b></span><br />
<div>
When looking for a view of the
London skyline, most people think to head to the London Eye. While the eye is fun to look at, riding it is
a little overrated. The glass windows
create a glare on photos, and you are only at the top for a very short amount
of time. The best place to get a great
view of London is the top of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The domed cathedral is famous itself
(Princess Diana was married here) and it is worth visiting just to look around
inside. But, if you are brave enough to
climb the 528 steps to the top, you will be met with outstanding views of the
city. The climb itself is something of
an experience as the steps are somewhat ancient.<br />

<div>
London is world famous for its
theater, and once you see a play, you will understand why. The West End performances, the most famous by
far, can get a little expensive.
However, if you are willing to sit in the nose bleeds, you can see
almost anything for an affordable price.
The theaters are often very old and beautiful as well. If you are
visiting London during the warmer months, attending a play at Shakespeare’s
Globe is my favorite option. The theater
is a replica of Shakespeare’s own London theater, the plays are fantastic (even
if you don’t consider yourself a Shakespeare fan), and you can watch the play
in the pit (like the groundlings of the 17th century) for as little
as 5 pounds</div>

<div>
My favorite thing to do in London
it to take a walk along the River Thames. Not only will you have great views of
the major sights, you will also get to soak up some London atmosphere. I suggest starting near the London Eye and
walking to Tower Bridge. Doing this, you will see: London Eye, Tate Modern,
London Bridge, Millennium Bridge, National Theater, Globe Theater, Southbank
Book Market, London Aquarium, and Tower Bridge. If you run out of time or get tired, there
are tube stations, cafes, and restaurants along the way. </div>

London has no shortage of famous
museums, and the best part about it is that most of them are free. While any and all of these museums are worth
visiting, my two favorite are the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert. The British Museum has 8 million works from
human history and culture including mummies and the Rosetta Stone. The Victoria and Albert museum contains 4.5
million objects from decorative arts, design, and history.<br />

<div>
Tower Bridge is one of the most
famous London landmarks, and the Tower of London, resting at one end of the
bridge, is the most historical. The Tower
of London, or Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress, is the historic castle
and prison that is mentioned so often in film, TV, and literature. The tower was used by such famous names as William
the Conqueror, Richard the Lionheart, and the Tudors, and was site of Anne Boleyn's execution. It is now one of England’s most popular
attractions, home to the Crown Jewels (including the world’s largest diamond),
and is one of the most haunted buildings in Britain.<br />

Having afternoon tea in London is
a must. While there are countless places
to do it, my favorite is the Orangery at Kensington Palace. Kensington Palace
is another of London’s famous historic palaces situated at the edge of Hyde
Park in Kensington Gardens. The tea is
fantastic (and affordable) and the building, staff, and atmosphere will make

When you need a break for the
noisy streets of London, it is time to talk a stroll in Hyde Park. As one of London’s largest parks, you can

London is famous for its double

of them during your trip, but why not take it a step further and ride one? Instead of taking the tube, hop on a bus (an
oyster card works on both) and head upstairs.
If you can, sit in the very front. After you get over the feeling that
you are going to run into every car, cyclist, and building, you will enjoy
great view of the city. <o:p></o:p><br />

Many people (myself included) don’t realize how close Stonehenge is to the highway. We imagine it being out in the middle of nowhere with rolling green hills on either side. While the rolling green hills are there, there is also a major highway cutting right through them. Stonehenge is literally right on the side of the road. Many tourist simply pull over, snap a few shots, and get back on the road. No, no, no! Pay the £13.90 to get inside the fence and REALLY see it.<br />

<b><u>DO: GO EARLY</u> </b>
It usually opens at 9:30, and getting there right at that time is the best. Not only will you avoid crowds (the tour buses don’t show up until later) but you will be able to see Stonehenge during a beautiful English morning. You will experience this ancient site during the misty hours of the morning, before the sun really makes its way out, adding to the magic of the whole experience. You also have the option to stay a little longer and see Stonehenge in the afternoon sun as well.<br />

<b><u>DON'T: SPEED THROUGH</u></b><br />
Take your time, walk around a few times, listen to your audio guide, and take in the gorgeous scenery of the English countryside. You can even take a few minutes to sit in the grass and relax (I’m sure your legs will thank you as traveling can be ruff on them), and think about all the history and mystery you are in the presence of.<br />

<b><u>DO: BOOK YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE</u></b><br />
This was not the case when I went (we just showed up), but times have changed. There is now a visitor center, café, and a need to advance book tickets. While there is a chance that you can visit if you just show up, it is better to be safe than sorry. I would suggest booking online a few days (or more) in advance.</div>
